replacing or modifying the silencer
Permalink

Ive just  got a quote for £60 for a good second hand standard silencer for an XR 400.

Is this a reasonable price ?

I doubt if the original insert is still in place cos they were pretty much instantly removed and the airbox opening modified .

Will it be quieter than the so called FMF 'Q' pipe Im currently using ?

I recall seeing a way of shutting the noise down on a standard XR4 without strangling the engine,

can anyone point me in this direction ?

£60 for a good silencer is a good price.

i seem to remember that vw beetle baffles fit xr4 silencers and make a lot of difference.

thanks c/f

will see if I can get it a bit cheaper as theres a fuel tap and a gear change lever in the package.

Luckily, laziness stopped me ordering the silencer and fuel tap as it turns out there is a spare XR4 silencer in a shed about 5 miles from me.

Hopefully I will have the opportunity to try it and dick around with baffle ideas ( that dont require damaging the bit Im borrowing ) before any sale discussion takes place.

Might just be a swap for the 'Q' pipe ....

Several bits of XR 250 and 400 exhausts were duly aquired and several options to kill the noise were tried but all my efforts proved to be louder than the FMF 'Q' pipe.

Fortunately there was a standard 250 insert that was pretty effective in a standard 400 box.

What we ended up with though, was a stretched 400 box with a larger chamber and the 250 insert. This stretched silencer ends in the same place as the 'Q' did and in all honesty it really aint as pretty.

BUT

its sooooo much quieter and I dont think the performance is effected, certainly not in the range of trailriding anyway.

Woo hoo.....    you aint heard me then

In order to avoid involving money, I swapped the unbattered FMF 'Q' silencer for the bucket of honda bits.  I can always buy it back off ebay confuse

ps. when the treads get a bit lower on that rear tyre it should start to roll pretty quietly on the tarmac smile
