This should be interesting, going to try and purchase all black plastics for the bike, they are looking a bit tatty so nows a good time to try and tone the bike down a bit.

I wonder if its possible?

Alternatively, buy a set of standard plastics and put them out of sight on the top shelf.

Buy some dull military colours in that self etching plastic paint and splash it on the tatty ones.

At sale time dress up in the shiny ones and explain the benefit of the not so shiny set.

Oh yes can anyone tell me what the paint is called and where it can be purchased .......

Apparently this is the way to do it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T4L0lXJOD8

and this is the product -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rit-Dye-Fabric-Dye-Also-dyes-Light-plastics-BLACK_W0QQitemZ190370112510QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Crafts_Fabric_Textiles_SM?hash=item2c52f163fe

Lots of different colours but they can only go from lighter to darker.

Much better than the paint as it dyes right into the plastic and scratches dont show up like with paint.
I've seen a set done on a yam and I thought the owner had purchased some replacement plastics. Turns out they were the original set.

I will be getting some then

see you on the dark side furious

got to be dye I reckon

paint on scratched doesnt sound like the answer especially as more scratches just might be added ......

Been wondering how to do a fuel tank.

remove cap and fuel tap and dye the inside ?
weigh it down with 20mm aggregate ?
leave it full of petrol  ?

what could possibly go wrong

Replace the tank with a Fuel Cell....oh bum, it all just got too expensive.

How about disguising the tank with a sheepskin. This may look suspicious though biggrin

Sticky back plastic has to be the answer. Cheap and when it starts flapping about it'll make the bike look like a tree!

Yes,  exactly whats been exercising my thinking.
A tank n mudguard shaped pot that will allow a gas ring to sit underneath it.

I guess a 47kg gas cylinder could be the answer ....

I just happen to know where theres a nest of em abandoned   wink

If I could decapitate one to allow a fully immersed mudguard or three to bathe in luxury then it might become a stealth gathering, a bring yer bits party ....

Ive got a propane gas ring that was used as a pitch boiler, just never seem to have any propane.

Or perhaps build a suitable lid and pass the container and contents on.

Oops, dont worry,  it should wash off yer fancy brick paving missis ....

I suspect the more liquid thats required, the more dye will have to be thrown in ?

When you get the dye perhaps you could tell us wot it says ?

i will let you know the quantities when it arrives.

an empty 45 gallon drum as a short term trial pot ??

An oil drum would be good if a mudguard could lie on its side and only needed around 6" of liquid.
There might be an issue if it was in good contact with the bottom of the oil drum and the heating system was directly underneath. Perhaps some wire spacers ?

The 47kg LPG bottle is sitting on the lawn as I write.
Approx 14" diameter and 1.2m deep.
The whizzy wheel eagerly awaits its moment
What could possibly go wrong smile

There are three more abandoned gas bottles this size hiding in the brambles at a little known woodland.

it has arrived !!!

There is also a sink/bucket method which involves mixing it in hot water but no heat source.

for dying fabric its 1 packet to 3 gallons.

i will provide the dye for our test run then.

how many do we need ?

The sink / bucket approach will only allow dyeing for a brief period of cooling time,  unless  a live kettle element could be dangled in the brew.

Also, is there a reheat / reuse option or is it use once and time based ?

If I get home from work early enough on Wednesday,  I will attempt the cylinder decapitation,  mudguard insertion and a measured fill up.

I have just had an entertaining vision -

It consists of a bonfire of wood with a decapitated  gas bottle in the middle and some people dancing anxiously around

what could possibly go wrong ?

run out of beer halfway through ?

run out of beer halfway through ?

that would be very poor planning, I expect.

Anyway yer tiz -

Thought it would swallow an entire set of plastics in one go but a single mudguard only just makes the full immersion therapy .

Total water content was a not insignificant 75 litres, or about 17 gallons
So thats six packets and about a £5 worth of leccy to cook it.
Perhaps the communal BBQ is the best option ?

I can probably get permission to use a little known woodland near Exeter ......

So, is the dye reusable or is it a cook once, then get some more ?

The mix is reusable.

It only takes 3-4 minutes of immersion to get the colourchange if the water is around 100c.

It is possible to do mudguards half at a time

So the cauldron will be set up in a little known woodland west of Exeter and the BBQ will be lit when there is enough interest.

We would seem to have three interested, ie me, churchfart and the YZ owner who gave me the above info and now wants to dye his fueltank.

So we either chuck in two packets of dye each and get it done asap or we wait for three more to join the party and contribute a packet each.

£3.75 + £1.25 postage gets you as much plastic blacking as you want.

I had another chat with a certain non stealth YZ250 freestyle rider, who gave me the low-down on what he did.

He did three gallons in a big metal pot on the gas stove at home .

He did a trial on an old mudguard when the water was at 80c ( the min temp) and dipped it in half at a time for approx 3 minutes.
It went proper black and when gouged with a stanley knife, still looked black.

He did a fuel tank by filling it with cold water and sealing the top.
The tank now seems to hold a bit more fuel cos he didnt allow for expansion, and where he stuck the graffix on, the glue seems to have pulled the dye out of the plastic. He thinks leaving it a bit longer to actually dry might have helped.

There were a few black drips landed on the engine after the bike was left out and it rained. A period of setting then a wash would seem to make sense.

Some of the plastics that seem to contain more nylon, disc protectors, chain slider etc, do not darken as well as the big flexi plastics.

Handling the 3 gallons in his kitchen and trying not to splash or drip the dye mix onto any surfaces, was a big problem.

Yon FMX rider has just purchased another YZ250 and would like to partake in a dyeing sessions
( not to be confused with the dying they do at the Swiss clinic,  Gravitas ).

Dont know how long it would take to heat 75 litres (17 gallons) up to around 90c, probably a couple of hours to build a suitable fire and nurture it.
Then weve got to work out how best to insert and remove big and small bits of plastic into a container thats got nearly a metre deep hot black liquid and surrounded by fire.

I guess light the fire about 1pm on a Saturday, dunking from 3pm onwards ?

Churchfart, you were going to try and get a deal on 5 packs of dye, any progress ?

Ok, when is a good time for those interested ?

Suggest a saturday afternoon and not raining so the fire wood can be gathered without getting us wet and dirty.

Oh thats what we do anyway   ....

easier to light the fire and more pleasant to hang around and discuss shades of black though

Hows about Sat 3rd April at Haccadown Woods ?

blimey, is it ?

Ok, what about the saturday after the easter weekend ?

Just trying to find a time that would suit enough to make it worth lighting the fire and sharing the cost of the dye.

10th's probably OK!  I'm stealthily in La Belle (Merde, il est froid) France but I'm sneaking back in to the UK at midnight on the 3rd so would miss the fun if it was on the third!

So who might be able to make Sat 10th April  ?

I am sort of planning to strip plastics off the various bikes sat am, then go to haccadown woods, west of Exeter,  Sat pm and light the fire if the dye turns up.

At the moment all the dye has been purchased by churchfart.....

Perhaps we work at  £ 5 per person showing up when the cauldron is bubbling with no limit on how many bits they want to dye.

Once CF had recovered his costs, future sessions can either be free or same rate with surplus to go to local TRF RoW effort ?

Forecast is nice and there might be some freestyle distraction ...
